German gaming legislation


The State Treaty on gaming that took effect in January 2008 is widely viewed as one of the most absurd pieces of legislation ever to have been passed in Germany and is a thinly veiled attempt to cement the state’s monopoly by purporting to prevent gambling addic­tion. In addition to the overall damage caused by this State Treaty to the economy there is moreover the risk that most Germans who like to bet will switch to the black market and use arrangements that have no safe­guards for the punter nor take any measures to prevent addiction.
